The Difference Between Punk and Metal





















PUNK ROCK

  1. Developed between 1976 and 1979 in the United States, and United Kingdom. By Late 1976, bands such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols and The Clash 
  2. Punk rock songs tend to be shorter than those of other popular genres

  4. Bass guitar lines are often uncomplicated, used pick 
  5. Drums typically sound heavy and dry
  6. The vocals sound nasal 
  7. Lyrical theme is expressing youthful rebellion and anti-authoritarian ideologies

  • Post Punk (1977) England : tended to be less pop and more dark and abrasive sometimes verging on the atonal. -Joy Division, The Fall, and Magazine, Gang of Four, and London's The Raincoats
  • Hardcore (1978) United States : A distinctive style of punk, characterized by superfast, aggressive beats, screaming vocals, and often politically aware lyrics. -Middle Class and Black Flag, Bad Brains
  • Pop punk : Combine elements of punk rock with pop music
Punk fashion usually dirty and simple clotes, jeans, leather jacket, spiky hairstyles, jewelry, and body modifications of the punk subculture.

HEAVY METAL

  1. In the late of 1960s and early 1970 Heavy Metal was born by bands such us Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. 
  2. They carried the music fast 
  3. Loud distorted guitars 
  4. Emphatic rhythms 
  5. Dense bass, tremolo bass 
  6. Dense drum, double beat bass drum 
  7. Vocalist sometime growl, scream, grunt 
  8. Keyboard instruments are sometimes used to enhance the fullness of the sound 
  9. Lyrical theme is about dark, and depression 
  10. Famous subgenres is :
  • Thrash Metal (early 1980s) : faster and more aggressive, Low-register guitar riffs are typically, Lyrics often express nihilistic. -Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus, Pantera, and Metallica
  • Black Metal (mid-1980s) : shrieked and growled vocals, highly distorted guitars, rapid tremolo picking, blast beat drumming, vocalist is shrieks, growl, screams and snarls. And the lyric theme is Satanism, atheism, and paganism. -Venom, Hellhammer, Bathory
  • Death Metal (mid-1980s) : heavily distorted guitars, tremolo picking, deep growling vocals, blast beat drumming, vocals are roars, grunts, snarls. Lyrical theme often violence. -Carnage, God Macabre, Entombed
  • Gothic Metal (Early 1990s) : add keyboard to create more of dark atmosphere. , usually have 2 vocalist, the man is growl, and the woman is scream. - Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema
